How a Social Media Detox Could Be Good for You.

In this digital age, it can be hard to step away from social media, but a digital detox could just be what you need. 🙋‍♀️ It’s no doubt we live and breathe social media here at Daily Digital - but truth be told, we also love a break away from the screens, and we think you should too. 🙌

Today we're discussing why we believe ditching social media for a moment is important for you and your mental health, and how taking a break from the screens can be a good thing. Let’s get into it.

Social media comes with distraction.. and comparison.

With all of the rings, pings and pop-ups that come with social media, the more distractions we’re faced with in our day-to-day life. So many of us are checking our screens on auto-pilot, no matter what time of the day and allowing the digital world to distract us from the present moment and even affect the productivity of our daily tasks.

We’re now looking at other people’s lives 24/7; with that, we can compare our wants and needs with others; and begin to think that we need certain things that we really don’t.

A detox will allow you to check in with yourself.

Having a detox away from the screens and unplugging from social media can help you to re-evaluate aspects of your life - without being influenced by anyone else. A break from the screens can allow you to check in with yourself and think about what you want out of life without anyone else's input.

How nice is that?

Tuning out will also help you to improve your sleep.

This is a big one. To all the insomniacs out there - this is for you.

Are you guilty of sifting through Safari until it’s finally time to sleep? Then wake up feeling *meh* unrefreshed? 😑 You’re not the only one! 🙋‍♀️

Too many of us are guilty of switching our nightly reading for nightly TikTok in bed.. and it’s seriously affecting the quality of our sleep.

Honey, that blue light is not suitable for you and should be avoided for at least two hours before bed if you want a good night's sleep. That’s right, in fact, did you know “blue light messes with your body's ability to prepare for sleep because it blocks a hormone called melatonin that makes you sleepy?” (Salamon, 2020). So to those who are missing out on catching Z’s - just put the phone away. Trust us; you aren’t missing out on that much.

Disconnecting allows you to reconnect with reality and live in the moment.

Having a break from social media can allow you to focus on yourself and reconnect with the things that genuinely make you happy. We know it can be nice to create a digital photo book of your experiences and life, but when social media begins to take over and take our attention away from those who are right next to us, that becomes a problem.

All we’re saying is; that if you begin to notice that you’re not in touch with yourself or your goals - check on your screen time. Maybe adjust and have a much-needed detox?

We’re not telling you to throw your phone away entirely. Just assess how much time you spend looking at your screen during the day, and cut it back by a couple of hours. Maybe make a no phone at the table rule, or switch your phone alarm for a standard alarm clock - simple changes like this could make a huge difference; you’ll become present in your relationships, have better quality sleep and be even closer to your goals.

 We hope this helps.
