Is The Metaverse Going To Change How We Do Life?

By the end of the decade, Mark Zuckerberg says he hopes that there will be billions of people spending hundreds of dollars each in The Metaverse.

So, what is The Metaverse?

All right, let's get into it.

The Metaverse is a virtual world where you can work, play, catch up, and chill with friends. It’s like a digital universe that you’ll be able to explore from the comfort of your living room.  Do you want to go to a concert? Done, Fly to Europe? Easy. Feel like escaping to your private bubble with a luxe interior and a jaw-dropping view? Done. All of this can be experienced by you through a virtual, multidimensional representation of yourself.

Pretty cool, huh?

You can create a digital version of yourself or an ‘avatar’ to look exactly like you - and if you want to be someone else, that’s fine too!

Did you know you can even check social media while in The Metaverse?

Yip, forget your phone; just put your headset on and visualise your newsfeeds right in front of you – crazy, right?

Meta & Microsoft are defining The Metaverse as “The virtual world that will usher in the next phase of the internet.”

Mark Zuckerberg explains that this is where the world is heading within the next decade, but it doesn’t stop there. The Meta team are working on refining a more ‘augmented’ reality, where you’ll be able to visualise holograms blended in seamlessly with real life. Imagine sitting at your dinner table and visualising a holographic board game you can play with your friends in avatar form… It’s taking things to that next futuristic level.

Your life in The Metaverse can be a pure reflection of what you wished your life was like. You can recreate yourself and make friends with total strangers. Become a pop star or a world champion. You can hang out with other avatars in virtual venues, do an intense HIIT workout or relax with a meditation simulation.

Can you make money in The Metaverse?

One stand-out comment from Zuckerberg is that he says that The Metaverse is going to create many opportunities for creators. He touches on the ‘creator economy’ and envisions a world where millions of digital creators can do work that makes them happy - as their full-time job in the Metaverse.

“We hope to get to around a billion people in The Metaverse doing hundreds of dollars of commerce, each buying digital goods, digital content, different things to express themselves, so whether that’s clothing for their avatar or different digital goods for their virtual home or things to decorate their virtual conference room, utilities to be able to be more productive in virtual and augmented reality and across The Metaverse overall,” says Zuckerberg.

Show me the money, honey!

This is a huge business opportunity for Facebook (Meta), and it will shape the next century. The options for digital creators in the Meta world will be game-changing.

Is this the future of remote work?

For many of us, remote work is here to stay; Meta has full faith that remote workers will adapt to having ‘in-person’ meetings with colleagues in The Metaverse. They are working hard to refine this to make it as realistic as possible. You’ll be able to create work accounts, separate your personal social media from work, and keep privacy high.

Could life in The Metaverse lead to a detachment from the real world?

Meta says the aim is ultimately to “bring people together.” You’ll even be able to bring things from the physical world into The Metaverse. However, we think The Metaverse could create a “new sense of reality” for many people by limiting in-person interactions and experiences, which could lead to a detachment from the real world.

This Everything Facebook revealed about the Metaverse in 11 minutes video discusses everything the metaverse will aim to be, including VR and AR technologies the company is developing for the future.

To answer the question, will The Metaverse change how we do life?  We think it will create opportunities for us to do life differently if we want to. Altogether, talking about The Metaverse makes it feel like that digital ‘future’ we’ve always dreamed about is much closer than we think.
